Tanecia Elzey experienced a major life transition in early 2024 when she went through a divorce, which significantly impacted her financial stability. Despite working full-time as a government employee and holding a second job, she found herself struggling after unexpectedly losing one of her positions. At the same time, her rent increased, and she began falling behind on payments.
Feeling overwhelmed, Tanecia confided in a friend from her church, Dayspring Community Church. Her friend encouraged her to reach out to the church’s administrators for support. Dayspring is a partner in Brightpoint’s Bounce Back program, which allows participating churches to refer members for case management and financial assistance during times of crisis.
Initially hesitant, Tanecia wasn’t sure she would qualify for help. “I’ve always been a hard worker,” she shared. “I never thought I would have to utilize a program like this.” But she took a leap of faith—and it paid off.
Brightpoint stepped in to help Tanecia catch up on rent and cover past-due utility bills. The relief was immediate. “It felt like a weight had been lifted,” she said.
Beyond financial assistance, Brightpoint connected Tanecia with Mindy Crupe, a training development specialist with the Brightpoint Development Fund. Mindy worked with Tanecia on budgeting strategies tailored to her new reality as a single mother to a teenage daughter. By cutting back on streaming services, adjusting grocery habits, and picking up a part-time job, Tanecia regained control of her finances. She credits the experience with helping her discover her inner strength.
When another setback occurred—Tanecia fell and broke her back—she had to take time off work and faced yet another rent increase. Once again, Brightpoint was there. “I can pick up the phone and ask for help with anything,” she said. “Brightpoint has become an ongoing resource for me.”
Today, Tanecia is not only caught up on rent—she’s paying it in advance. She continues to build her financial knowledge and encourages others to seek help when they need it. “If my story can help someone like me who has a financial hiccup, then I’m happy to share it.”
